James Younghusband scores brace, Kaya denied as Davao Aguilas claw back for draw

“Xavi out!” – Al Sadd fans chant for star’s exit after latest loss in Qatar

It was a match that the visitors would rue as Davao Aguilas fought back from a two-goal deficit to get a draw courtesy of James Younghusband,  denying Kaya FC a monumental upset against the hosts to start off their Philippines Football League 2018 campaigns.

The match began with chances coming at a premium as both Kaya and Davao struggle to find their rhythm in the game.

Both teams suffered from poor passes and first touches with the ball seemingly hard to control with a speculative effort from the visiting side that was blocked by a packed penalty area being the notable attempt.

But soon within the first quarter of an hour, Kaya FC started to be a bit more imposing.

The newly transferred Iloilo-side’s intent was rewarded in the 18th minute as Alfred Osei scored off a chase-down after an initial attempt from a breakaway off a teasing ball was mistimed.

Immediately after, it was all Kaya as they were able to smell blood and started to be more enterprising within Davao Aguilas’ side of the pitch, but were not able to capitalize.

A minute later, it was Davao’s turn to have their spell but their attempts were easily thwarted.

Come the 31st minute Kaya came close with Jordan Mintah unleashing a wicked curler that just missed the far post.

In the 33rd minute another promising chance went into the visitors’ way as Lopez-Mendy went one on one with keeper Nicholas O’Donnell who was able to make a fine save as time eventually expired in the first half with Kaya nursing a slim 1-0 lead.

In the second half, it was the visitors who were initially poised to get the full three points as former FC Meralco Manila forward Connor Tacagni headed in from close range off an assist from Robert Mendy.

But what initially seemed a comfortable lead suddenly spurred on the hosts to mount a comeback with James Younghusband proving the hero of the match for the home team.

With both of James’ goals coming in the 51st and 57th minutes from a set pieces Kaya FC would need to address was fully exposed in that spell.

Aguilas almost got the win in the 63rd minute only for them to be denied by the post.

In the end, both teams settle for a draw as both, particularly Kaya, would probably look into the result disappointingly while Davao would also reflect on their sluggish start in definitely an exciting game of football for the neutrals.
