Ceres Negros shoot down Davao Aguilas’ challenge

Al Nassr score in the 98th minute to snatch victory over Al Zawraa

Ceres Negros continue their superiority in the Philippines Football League (PFL) after defeating second placed Davao Aguilas.

Davao Aguilas were presented the first chance of the match in the fourth minute as Harrison Sawyer produced a well taken header off a feed from Guirado but Doblas pulled off a great stop to snuff out the attempt.

Six minutes after Ceres was able to get into the Davao box but Maranon’s shot was wide.

A barren spell followed with not much promise from both sides.

Action inside the box resumed in the 21st minute when Mike Ott forced O’Donnell for a last ditch save to put the ball wide.

Approaching halftime, Ceres suddenly came to life with their flanks suddenly peppering Davao with dangerous ball-ins.

The Mindanao-based club were able to deal the initial barrage of crosses, however they cannot come up with a firm clearance that would disrupt the busmen’s flow.

The constant pressure eventually paid off with Bienvenido Maranon pulling out a display of brilliance as the Spaniard produced a strike from the right corner of the box that lobbed over and beat a helpless O’Donnell.

Davao Aguilas tried to respond but weren’t able to come up with a clear cut chance as Maranon’s goal gave Ceres Negros a slim advantage heading into the halftime break.

Davao Aguilas could have pulled things level seven minutes after the restart, but Harrison Sawyer’s shot was saved well by Toni Doblas.

Negros tried to retaliate but Maranon’s attempt for a brace was denied by O’Donnell.

In the 55th minute Mike Ott was released for a one on one situation with O’Donnell. His initial shot was saved but the Ceres winger was able to get to the loose ball to tap into the empty net and double the lead.

Davao should have pulled a goal back in the 62nd minute with a double attempt but Ceres’ defence and Doblas were there to pull off equally stunning saves.

Chances arrived for both teams for the remainder of the game but The Busmen retained their two-goal cushion until full-time.

Davao Aguilas will host Stallion Laguna in their next match on 6 May 2017.

Meanwhile Ceres Negros will visit Kaya FC in Iloilo on 12 May 2017
