Regala, Doctora on target as Stallion Laguna edge Global Cebu

Stallion Darwin Regala

A goal in either half from Darwin Regala and Ruben Doctora, respectively, gave Stallion Laguna a 2-1 win over Global Cebu in a damp Binan Football Stadium.

The match began with visitors Global being the brighter side with Darryl Roberts being presented a very good chance inside the box in the 11th minute but he mis-timed his attempt as Stallion were let off the hook.

A minute later, Global were awarded a free-kick with Dominic Del Rosario’s promising ball failing to connect with an on-rushing Jordan Jarvis.

Global Cebu were a bit more composed within the first quarter of an hour with their solid defence while they were able to foray into Stallion’s territory on a few occasions.

However as the 20th minute approached, Stallion started to get into their groove as they were able to enjoy a good spell of possession that ended with Yannick Tuason firing a decent effort from range but his shot did not have enough dip as the ball sailed over the bar.

After three minutes it was Abou Mohamed Sy’s turn to test Global Cebu but his attempt from range went wide of the far post. At this juncture, the momentum already shifted to Stallion Laguna as Coach Ernest Nierras’ men were able to carve out a few promising chances.

Soon enough within the same minute, Darwin Regala gave Stallion the lead off a great run into the box with Yannick Tuason providing the assist.

At the half hour mark, Another chance came for the hosts as Tuason squared to Melliza who produced a low drive from inside the box but the attempt was well saved by Deyto. Abou Sy latched onto the rebound from a tight angle but Deyto still was on hand to deny the attempt as Coach Marjo Allado’s men remained very much in the game due to his keeper’s heroics.

Global could have equalised in the 37th minute off a corner, but it wasn’t meant to be as Stallion defender Ko Kyung-joon’s initial clearance found Darryl Roberts’ whose improvised aerial volley sailed wide.

The half-time eventually arrived with the hosts holding a slim lead.

Two minutes after the restart, Deyto once again came up big for his club as he denied both Tuason and Arboleda in succession.

Come the 54th minute, another chance came Stallion’s way with Arboleda finding himself in a one-versus-one situation against Deyto but Global’s keeper prevailed with another crucial save.

Three minutes later Stallion saw their biggest missed chance of the game as Abou Sy was able to lay-off a great ball for Doctora after a great run but the captain’s attempt surprisingly missed the target from point-blank range.

The minutes passed with both sides having half-chances that went to naught in an interesting affair as the visitors pushed for an equaliser while the hosts tried to increase their lead.

Eventually the Binan-based outfit got the insurance goal in the 74th minute as Doctora was able to make amends from his earlier miss when he pounced on the loose ball off from substitute Farbod Mahmudi’s initial attempt.

Global could have had a consolation goal in the 76th minute off a set-piece but Hayeson Pepito did well to deny Gerardo Valmayor’s header.

But Coach Marjo Allado and his squad finally got one back in the 87th minute when Pepito made an error, with Gerardo Valmayor capitalising to the fullest to notch the only goal for his team.

The result maintains Stallion’s 2-point gap with Davao Aguilas who are in third place while Global’s loss puts them in last place of the standings.

Stallion Laguna will next face Davao Aguilas on June 17 while Global Cebu will face league leaders Ceres Negros in an away fixture on June 16.

Curt Dizon back on the pitch

After a lengthy absence due to a fractured arm sustained last March 3 against JPV Marikina that needed to be surgically repaired, Curt Dizon returned to action for the first time for Global Cebu.
