First half dominance gives Kaya a much-needed win over JPV

Safawi’s freekick secures Malaysia 1-0 win over Laos in 2020 AFC U-23 qualifier

Three unanswered goals in the first half proved telling as Kaya FC Iloilo bounced back to winning ways with a convincing defeat of JPV Marikina in their PFL Sunday clash at the PFF Artificial Turf Pitch in San Lazaro Liesure Park – Carmona, Cavite.

Just four minutes into the match, the Iloilo outfit got themselves in front after another dead-ball special delivery by free-kick expert Miguel Tanton that beat the JPV defence.

The early conversion turned out to be a preview of things to come as just after four minutes, Ghanaian midfielder Alfred Osei found himself on the scoresheet as well to double Kaya’s lead as even even the club’s Twitter account cannot hide its pleasure of enjoying a two goal advantage within just the first ten minutes of the proceedings.

The match eventually settled a bit after that frenetic on-two punch by Kaya as JPV started to get a bit of a foothold of the game. But Kaya still had better chances with forward Connor Tacagni producing a decent effort in the 22nd minute that only went wide of the goal mouth.

Kaya continued to dominate the chances with Alfred Osei having a decent shot in the 35th minute that was saved by JPV keeper Nelson Gasic, but just a few moments before halftime, an inspired Tacagni forced a golden opportunity for his squad when his foray into the box resulted in an infraction by a JPV defender to give the referee no choice but to award a penalty.

Top-striker Robert Lopez Mendy dutifully took the spot-kick who made no mistake to register his 13th goal of the PFL season putting him at the top of the scorers’ list alongside Ceres-Negros’ Bienvenido Maranon.

With not much time left after Mendy’s goal, both teams headed into the break with JPV Marikina having a mountain to climb if they ever want to salvage something out of the fixture.

After the restart, Kaya Iloilo still seemed to have not lost their mojo as they produced another gilt-edged chance after Miguel Tanton’s well-struck freekick unfortunately was denied by the woodwork.

In the 70th minute, JPV Marikina were able to produce a scare as with an attacking play that beat keeper Ace Villanueva, but it ended to naught.

It turned out to be the last promising chance for both teams as it proved to be a goalless second half with Kaya’s first half salvo a more than enough output to get themselves back to winning ways.

The 3-0 result continued Kaya Iloilo’s mastery of JPV in this season’s PFL head-to-head record, with the Visayas-based squad notching their fourth win in their last four meetings (JPV last defeated Kaya last September 10, 2017).

The win also serves as a very much needed result for Kaya as they failed to notch a victory in their previous three games (1 Draw, 2 Losses). The winless streak eventually helped Ceres-Negros clinch the league title last July 25, 2018 with three games to spare.
