Stallion Laguna, Kaya Iloilo share spoils to end season series in a tie

“Xavi out!” – Al Sadd fans chant for star’s exit after latest loss in Qatar

Stallion Laguna and Kaya Iloilo share spoils with a 1-1 draw in their final face-off in the Philippines Football League 2018 season held on Sunday, August 19, in Binan Football Stadium.

The match began with Stallion Laguna being the more enterprising between the two squads with early attempts that called Kaya’s keeper Ace Villanueva into action.

A few moments just before the first quarter of an hour another attacking play from Stallion developed but Arboleda’s attempt from an angle at the left flank flew off target.

In the 18th minute Kaya attempted a direct throw-in but Tripulca punched the ball clear. Mendy tried to keep the ball into play but failed as it went out of bounds for a goal kick.

Kaya Iloilo seemed to have gotten into grips in the game later on as they began to threaten more on the counter, but the hosts were able to snuff out the dangers posed.

Later, both sides began to trade promising plays against each other as Kaya threw a dangerous ball in the 37th minute but Matthew Nierras was able to produce atimely headed clearance to break down the threat.

After just two short minutes, it was Stallion’s turn to produce a scare, but Kaya defender Masanari Omura pulled off a timely intervention in front of goal to intercept a square pass from Polli to a rushing Melliza which could have ended in a sure goal for the hosts.

Kaya pulled off an immediate response to their hosts’ threat though with a well executed play that resulted in a goal as Bedic scored off a glancing header from a Janrick Soriano cross with just enough contact to guide the ball towards the far post and across the line for the icebreaker.

With not much time left, the visitors enjoyed a slim lead heading into the dugout as the referee blew the whistle that signalling the halftime break.

As the second half began to unfold, Stallion started to chase the tie applying more urgency in their game with more attacking verve.

The hosts search for an equaliser would eventually pay dividends as the diminutive but pacy forward Jesus Melliza cleverly took advantage of a defensive lapse by the Ilonggo outfit to get the leveller in the 56th minute of the match.

The match continued to wear on, and with nothing to separate both sides, Stallion and Kaya continued to claw and push to for the winner as they both traded offensive plays while the defensive lines of both sets of competitors were put to the test.

But in the end, despite some tactical adjustments and injection of fresh legs, the clash ended in a 1-1 draw as both teams conclude one of the most tightly contested head-to-head battles int the 2018 Philippines Football League Season with equal slates of 2 wins, 2 losses and 1 draw.

For Stallion, the result might turn out to crucially play against them heading into the last throes of the season in their objective to overtake Davao Aguilas in finishing third in the standings now that the Mindanaoan club’s lead is now increased to three points.
