PSV snatch title from Ajax on thrilling final day

Beijing Guoan knocked off top of table after loss to Jiangsu

De Graafschap midfielder Bryan Smeets' equaliser against Ajax meant that PSV's comfortable away win over Zwolle gave them the Eredivisie title in a remarkable final day of the season.

Amin Younes (16') opened the scoring for the would-be champions, but Smeets' (55') powerful shot from outside the box had the beating of the Ajax keeper to make the score 1-1, a scoreline that the relegated side from Doetinchem managed to hang on to.

At IJsseldelta Stadion, PSV Eindhoven put three past PEC Zwolle to snatch the eredivisie title away from Ajax. Jurgen Locadia (34') opened the scoring for the visitors and Luuk de Jong (43') grabbed a second soon after. Ouasim Bouy (66') pulled one back for the hosts, but De Jong (67') completed his brace immediately thereafter to send his side to the top of the Dutch table.
At the other end of the standings, already-relegated Cambuur Leeuwarden conceded two goals at home to Excelsior and failed to score themselves, ensuring their opponents another season in the Dutch top-flight. Tom van Weert (4') and Kevin Vermeulen (59') were the scorers.

Alkmaar's 3-1 away win over fellow Europa League hopefulls Utrecht ensured their automatic qualification for the tournament. Ridgeciano Haps (3') opened the scoring for the visitors and Dabney Souza (38') grabbed a second before half time. Rico Streider (69') pulled one back for Utrecht, but Vincent Janssen (72') ensured the win for Alkmaar soon after.

The mid-table clash between ADO Den Haag and Heerenveen ended in a 1-1 draw with Mike Havenaar (31') opening the scoring from the penalty spot for the hosts. Mitchell te Vrede (51') grabbed the equaliser for the visitors.

Vitesse Arnhem's 2-2 draw with FC Twente meant that they miss out on a Europa League play-off place. Bruno Uvini (3') opened the scoring for Arnhem with an own goal but Zakaria El Azzouzi (27') pulled one back for the hosts. The visitors went ahead again through Yuning Zhang (61') but Chinedu Ede (66') secured the point for this side soon after.

Feyenoord's third position wasn't under threat in the last match day of the season, but the Rotterdam club grabbed three points nonetheless by beating Nijmegen 1-0 and denying them a chance at a Europa League play-off spot. Dirk Kuyt (55') was the scorer of the game's only goal.

Groningen and Heracles Almelo ended the season in sixth and seventh position respectively despite the Groningen running out 2-1 winners. Rasmus Lindgren (52', 64') put the hosts two goals up and Iliass Bel Hassani (70') gave his side some hope for a late equaliser that was not to come.

Willem II's 2-3 away win over Roda JC had little consequence to either side other than giving the relegated team's travelling fans a happy send-off for the season. Jordy Buijs (19') opened the scoring for the hosts but Erik Falkenburg (34) equalised 15 minutes later. Roda took the lead again before half-time through Ugur Inceman (39) but two goals in quick succession from Bruno de Brito (47') and Lucas Andersen (55') gave the visitors all three points.
