Henderson: England should take inspiration from Leicester

Carlos urges Brazil to win Copa America as “perfect preparation for the 2022 World Cup”

Jordan Henderson says England should back themselves to win the World Cup and take inspiration from Leicester City’s shock Premier League triumph.

Leicester pulled off a surreal feat in the 2015/16 season when they clinched the Premier League title against all odds, and Henderson believes England can learn from their example when they fight at the World Cup.

The Three Lions are considered to have only an outside chance of going all the way in Russia, with the likes of Brazil, Spain, France, and Germany marked as favourites. However, Henderson believes optimism is key.

“You’ve got to go in with the mentality that we can go all the way, because we are good enough as a team,” the Liverpool midfielder said, according to FourFourTwo.

“There have been a lot of upsets in sport. No disrespect but look at when Leicester won the Premier League. Not a lot of people would have said they could have done that.

“That is just one instance. You’ve got to have belief in the group all the time and believe you can reach the heights.”

England have not made it past the quarter-final stage of the World Cup since winning the tournament in 1966.
