Barnes takes lead at Texas Open

Ricky Barnes shot a third round 67 to leapfrog Brendan Steele into the lead going into the final day of the Valero Texas Open.

Taking advantage of Steele only managing to make par with a round of 72, Barnes could afford to drop shots at the ninth and 18th thanks to birdies at seven other holes in his best day of the competition, ending on 11 under par.

The American, ranked 91st in the world and remains winless in 221 starts, is under plenty of pressure heading into the fourth and final round, however, with no less than 10 players within four shots of top spot.

Among the other big movers was Luke Donald, who carded his best of 68 to end the day on nine under, two strokes back.

Charley Hoffman, meanwhile, could have moved to within one stroke of Barnes, but missed a seven-foot birdie poot on the last hole and had to settle for being tied with Donald.

Having started the day firmly in contention, Australian Stuart Appleby had a day to forget, carding four bogies to end the day two over par – six shots off the lead.
