Cubs too strong for Phillies

David Ross belted his 100th career home run as the Chicago Cubs continued their recent return to good form with a 6-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.

Ross’ three-run hit in the fourth inning moved him to three figures as the Cubs recorded their third successive win, having lost eight of their 12 previous encounters.

Their efforts were backed up by Jon Lester, who allowed just two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings in a match that was delayed twice because of rain.

Tyler Chatwood starred as San Francisco’s five-game winning streak came to an end after the Giants slipped to a 5-2 defeat to the Colorado Rockies.

Chatwood allowed just one unearned run across seven innings to thwart Giants batters, while RBI doubles from Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story turned the game in Colorado’s favour.

The Cincinnati Reds lost their 11th game in a row after a pair of homers from Aaron Hill and three RBIs from Jonathan Lucroy gifted the Milwaukee Brewers a 9-5 win.

The Detroit Tigers saw off the Oakland Athletics 4-1, the Los Angeles Angels eased past the Houston Astros 7-2 and the Minnesota Twins beat the Seattle Mariners by the same scoreline.
