Dominant Davies wins in Germany

Chaz Davies raced to a dominant victory in Germany on Saturday in a race in which the championship was shaken up by Jonathan Rea's retirement.

Davies made a flying start from pole position to lead ahead of Tom Sykes and Rea, who jumped from sixth to third on the opening lap.

Davies immediately began to build up an advantage over the Kawasaki pairing, pulling away at almost a second per lap.

Checking out the front, all eyes turned to the battle for the podium which on lap 7 became a fight between Sykes and Lorenzo Savadori as Rea was thrown from his Kawasaki.

The championship leader rejoined down in 22nd place but was soon off the track again and headed back into the pits with a definite probably with his bike – it looked to be a shifting issue. It was Rea's second DNF in as many races.

A lap later Savadori was out of the battle as he too suffered problems while one lap after that Markus Reiterberger retired with a technical problem.

Midway through the 21-lap race Davies was leading by seven seconds over Sykes, who was two ahead of Nicky Hayden and Jordi Torres.

Hayden tried to hunt down Sykes, taking tenths out of the former World Champ's advantage only for Sykes to take it back time on the next lap. But heading into the penultimate lap he finally made inroads, just 0.9s behind Sykes.

As Davies romped to an unchallenged victory, taking the 25 points by a comfortably margin of 10 seconds, it was Sykes who finished second to close the gap to Rea to 26 points in the title race. Hayden was third for Honda.

Torres was fourth as he held off a late challenge from Leon Camier while Michael van der Mark was sixth.

Davide Giugliano, Alex Lowes, Sylvain Guintoli and Xavi Fores completed the top ten.
