Alonso to run Honda update at Sepang

Fernando Alonso will run Honda's latest engine upgrade at the Malaysian Grand Prix after the Japanese manufacturer spent two of its remaining tokens.

The double World Champion will trial the upgraded power unit in Friday's practices before a decision is made on whether to continue using it for the rest of the weekend.

Honda have updated the exhaust and engine block, reducing the weight and boosting efficiency.

Only Alonso will trial the new unit at Sepang with his team-mate Jenson Button being made to wait until Austin as reports suggest Honda do not want either McLaren driver to face penalties at their home race, the Japanese GP.

Alonso faces a 30-place grid penalty as he will be using an eighth internal combustion engine, turbocharger, and MGU-H and his seventh control electronics, and energy store.

Honda have one token remaining.

And yes…Sepang 2007…first win with @mclaren !! ???? #Malaysia #14 #fa14 #f1 #mclaren #moments
