Lynn grabs NY ePrix pole on Formula E debut

DS Virgin Racing’s Alex Lynn started his Formula E career in stunning fashion by storming to pole for Saturday’s race in New York City.

Standing in for Jose Maria Lopez, Lynn edged out Daniel Abt by two tenths of a second around the tight Brooklyn circuit in a shock result.

Lynn’s pace has been exceptional all week. He was quickest in FP1 and again impressed in qualifying to make it straight into superpole.

Abt, meanwhile, finished just 0.003s of Techeetah’s Jean-Eric Vergne to snatch second place ahead of the Frenchman.

Lynn’s teammate Sam Bird was a further 0.020s back in fourth, emphasising the impressive speed of the Virgin cars this week.

Jérôme d’Ambrosio will start from fifth place on the grid to give the struggling Faraday Future Dragon Racing team something to cheer about at their home race.

While d’Ambrosio’s superpole time was the slowest of the five who qualified, it is still Dragon’s best starting position of the campaign.

It wasn’t all sunshine and roses for the rookies, however, as Frenchman Pierry Gasly – standing in for championship leader Sebastien Buemi – could only manage 19th place out of 20 in qualifying.

Venturi driver Maro Engel was behind him only because a problem caused him to stop on track before he was able to set a 200kW lap.

Nick Heidfeld, Nelson Piquet Jr, Oliver Turvey, Nico Prost and Lucas di Grassi completed the top 10 behind the superpole runners.

Di Grassi was undone by a yellow flag on his flying lap as a result of Engel’s situation. His misfortune means Buemi’s absence this week might not end up hurting him too much in the championship race.

Lopez and Buemi are both taking part in the Nurburgring World Endurance Championship round this weekend.
