Thailand’s Siripuch Gulnoi hopes of an Olympic medal have ended after a disappointing showing in the women’s 63kg weightlifting final on Tuesday
Having started off well by lifting 105kgs and 108kgs in the snatch, Siripuch’s struggles began when she failed to lift 110kg in the snatch.
It continued to go downhill from there for the 23-year-old as she was unable to lift 132kg in any of her three attempts at the clean and jerk.
China’s Deng Wei took home the gold medal after breaking a world record with her combined total of 262kg. Deng lifted 147kg in the clean and jerk and 115kg in the snatch to beat Lin Tzu-chi’s combined lift record of 261kg at the 2014 Asian Games. Lin, who hails from Chinese Taipei, was banned from taking part at the Olympics after reportedly failing a doping test.
North Korea’s Choe Hyo Sim claimed silver after a combined lift of 248kg, while Karina Goricheva of Kazakhstan, who had a combined lift of 243kg, won bronze.
