Triyatno unable to match London success

There was disappointment for Indonesia’s Triyatno as he failed to repeat his exploits of the 2012 Olympic Games after finishing outside the medals in the men’s 69kg weightlifting.

The 28-year-old claimed silver four years ago, but had to settle for eighth in Rio with a disappointing combined total of 317kg, 16kgs less than the total that saw him finish second in London.

Thailand’s Tairat Bunsuk failed to make the final group and lifted a total of 316kg in Group B.

The gold medal went to China’s Shi Zhiyong who lifted a combined 352kg, just edging Daniyar Ismayilov of Turkey who posted a total score of 351kg. Izzat Artykov of Kyrgyzstan lifted a combined 339kg to win bronze.

Ismayilov had led for much of the competition after a 163kg lift in the snatch, but could only manage 188kg in clean and jerk which allowed the 22-year-old Shi to surpass him.
