Gilas Women 3×3 weathers tough Vietnam squad to advance to Gold medal match

Bouncing back nicely from their earlier defeat against Thailand, the Gilas Pilipinas Women’s 3×3 team are now one win away from claiming the Gold medal in the SEA Games’ first ever 3×3 Basketball Tournament.

Janine Pontejos waxed hot in the closing minutes, drilling a dagger two-pointer to give the host team a 21-12 win at the 3:14 mark of their match inside the FilOil Flying V Arena on Monday.

The Philippines got off on a quick start after Jack Animam scored back-to back lay-ups in a span of seconds. But Vietnam found  their groove shortly, taking an early 8-5 advantage after connecting on their long distance attempts.

Gilas got the momentum back after a crucial five-point swing courtesy of back-to-back two-pointers by Pontejos followed by a short stab by Clare Castro to take a 17-12 lead with under five minutes left.

They went for the jugular in the ensuing possessions, denying the Vietnamese team a basket en route to the nine-point victory.

The Philippines awaits the winner of the Malaysia-Thailand match in the gold medal match.
