SBP president Al Panlilio lauds Philippine men and women’s 3×3 teams for winning gold

The Philippines men and women’s 3×3 basketball teams have struck gold when they simultaneously brought home gold medals yesterday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in the 3×3 basketball competition in the 2019 SEA Games.

The Gilas men’s team bannered by Jason Perkins, Chris Newsome, Mo Tautuaa, and CJ Perez have completed a sweep of the event, by winning in all of their eight matches.

The Gilas women’s team, meanwhile, upended the gritty effort of Thailand in the Finals in order to secure the top prize buoyed by the superb play of Afril Bernardino, Jack Animam, Janine Pontejos, and Clare Castro.

No one could be happier than SBP president Al Panlilio, who expressed his admiration and gratitude towards the collective efforts of both teams.

“The Gilas Pilipinas Women 3×3 team makes history again by scoring the first SEA Games medal for the Philippines in women’s basketball.  Janine Pontejos, Clare Castro, Jack Danielle Animam, and Afril Bernardino captured the imagination of Filipino basketball fans and showed them the talent and heart of our Filipina ballers,” said Panlilio in a statement.

“The victory of Gilas Pilipinas Men 3×3 not only stamps our class as still the kings of basketball in the region, but also shows that we’re moving in the right direction in the half-court game. The SBP congratulates Chris Newsome, Jason Perkins, CJ Perez, and Moala Tautuaa for winning the gold and thanks them for their sacrifices in preparation for the SEA Games,” he added.

“I hope [both] teams enjoy this victory but we still have more medals to win. Laban Pilipinas. Para sa Bayan,” he concluded.
