‘Binigay naman ng team ‘yung best nila, kinapos lang’ – Coach Shaq on NT’s debut loss against Vietnam

While the Pinay Spikers fell short against Vietnam in their debut game in the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, national team head coach Shaq delos Santos said that he sees a silver lining in this loss.

Delos Santos lauded his players for a gallant stand but said the breaks of the game just favored Vietnam, especially in the deciding set.

“Naging maganda naman ‘yung performance pero na-short at hindi maganda ‘yung result pero lesson learned para sa amin. Siyempre kailangan naming paghandaan ‘yung mga next games,” he said.

Even with the loss, the national team head coach said they want to take things one step at a time since he believes that everything will fall in place once they are all on the same page.

“Pinaka-best na gawin namin is ‘yung magfocus muna kami doon sa next game namin – gaya nung sa Thailand. Doon muna kami mag mindset talaga,” delos Santos said.

“And then saka na namin isipin ‘yung result kasi once na natrabaho namin ito ng one at a time ay magkakaroon kami magandang result kasi hindi namin siya pwedeng pagsabay-sabayin,” he added.

It was an act of sweet vengeance for the Vietnamese side since the Philippines defeated them twice in the two legs of the ASEAN Grand Prix, but delos Santos explained that the Grand Prix was different from the SEA Games.

For one, Vietnam fielded a different set of players in the two tournaments.

“Siguro ‘yung additional players nila, isang senior player nila ‘yung outside, which nung ASEAN namin, nung second leg wala ‘yun. Wala rin ‘yung key player nila,” he said.

“And ‘yung first leg we had to Fil-Ams, so nagkaroon din kami ng adjustment. I think siguro hindi para sa amin ‘yung game. Umabot naman siya ng fifth set at binigay naman ng team ‘yung best nila,” he added.

The Pinay Spikers will face Thailand on Thursday for their second game in the four-country tournament.
