Argentinean tennis legend Guillermo Vilas has congratulated Rafael Nadal on equalling his record of 49 titles on clay courts, after the Spaniard’s win in Barcelona over the weekend.
Vilas took to Twitter saying ‘Muchas Felicidades por el logro @RafaelNadal , un abrazo.’ (‘Congrats for the achievement, an hug’)

On Sunday, Nadal beat defending champion Kei Nishikori of Japan 6-4, 7-5 to win the Barcelona Open for the ninth time, equalling Vilas’ clay-courts titles record of 49 titles.
The 63-year-old Vilas started his professional tennis career in 1969 and retired in 1992, winning four grand slam titles along the way – the Australian Open twice (1978 & 1979) and the French Open and US Open in 1977.
In the Open Era he won more than 900 matches and became only the second man to do that. His 659 wins on clay are by far the most of the era.
Nadal, who has won the French Open a record nine times, heads to Roland Garros hoping to win a tenth crown and his 15th grand slam title but will have world number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia to contend with.
