Controversial actor Shia Labeouf is set to play the role of tennis star John McEnroe in a movie about the American’s famous rivalry with Bjorn Borg.
The new biopic will focus on the 1980 Wimbledon final between the two legendary players, believed by many to be the greatest tennis match of all time.
Swedish newcomer Sverrir Gudnason will portray Bjorg, whose cool, calm demeanor contrasted so sharply with the fiery and temperamental McEnroe.
Borg won Wimbledon five times in a row between 1976 and 1980, while McEnroe went on to win in 1981, 1983 and 1984.
The casting of Labeouf, who is well known for his outrageous and eccentric behaviour, as McEnroe appears to be a match made in heaven, and the eccentric actor admitted he felt connected to the role.
“Jake (his current role in the film American Honey) is me. So is McEnroe. That’s it, man,” the Transformers star told reporters. “I understand these people, I empathise with them. I get it. You turn things up and turn things down. It’s me.”
