Wawrinka edges Rosol in five set thriller

‘She is one of my idols’ says Potapova after beating Kerber 6-4, 6-2

Stan Wawrinka endured a rocky start to his Roland Garros title defence but eventually emerged victorious over Lukas Rosol in the first round.

The Swiss ace twice came back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on the clay courts of an overcast Paris.

Players were made to wait on day two as thunderstorms engulfed the venue. Once the skies cleared and play resumed, Wawrinka found himself weathering a storm of his own after losing the first set.

Wawrinka battled back to level matters when the Czech capitulated in the second, breaking him twice.

But Rosol returned rejuvenated in the third and raced to 3-1 lead on his way to taking the lead in the match once again.

The fourth set was a tense affair, with Wawrinka coming out the more aggressive of the two, forcing Rosol to save four break points in the second game. Wawrinka would eventually force a decider after breaking Rosol in the eighth game.

A single break of serve in the fifth-set would be enough for the third seed to sneak an opening round win in a touch over three hours.

Earlier in the day, eighth seed Milos Raonic made short work of Janko Tipsarevic, winning 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(5) to advance to the second round.

Also in action was Jack Sock, who faced a tough assignment against Robin Haase. The 23rd seed required all five sets to defeat Haase 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-7(3), 6-2.
