Top seed John Isner wasted little time in booking his spot in the third round of the Citi Open, securing a 6-3, 6-4 win over James Duckworth.
The big-serving Isner lost just three points on his own serve in the 43-minute encounter to set up a third-round clash with 15th seed Marcos Baghdatis who downed John Millman 6-2, 6-4.
Third-seeded Bernard Tomic broke new ground as he defeated Donald Young 7-6(4), 6-3, his first win over the American. Next up for the Australian is what’s sure to be a testing battle against 13th seed Ivo Karlovic who last week became the oldest winner on the ATP Tour since 1979 when he claimed the Hall of Fame Championships at the age of 37.
Sixth seed Jack Sock defeated Lukas Lacko 7-6(1), 6-4, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the seeded players, with 10th seed Viktor Troicki losing to qualifier Ryan Harrison, while ninth seed Kevin Anderson’s injury-plagued season took another turn for the worse with a defeat to Malek Jaziri.
