Puig suffers shock defeat at Citi Open

Murray beaten by Sandgren in latest match of comeback in Winston-Salem Open

Third seed Monica Puig’s Citi Open campaign came to an end on Thursday as she was beaten 4-6, 2-6 by Lauren Davis.

The result marks a second consecutive disappointing tournament for Puig as she failed to have a strong showing at Wimbledon, where she lost to Johanna Konta 1-6, 5-7 in the first round.

Davis will take on Camila Giorgi in the quarter-finals after the Italian beat Tamira Paszek via a walkover.

Fourth seed Kristina Mladenovic had no problems in her second round match as she cruised past Sabine Lisicki 6-3, 6-3, while Japan’s Risa Ozaki also made it through to the last eight after downing Naomi Broady 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.
