Roberta Vinci needed all her experience to see off a strong challenge from Carina Witthoeft to advance to the fourth round of the US Open on Friday.
The seventh seed survived a second set comeback from the German to triumph 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 in a touch under two hours on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows.
While Witthoeft managed to save five break points in the opening set, Vinci piled on the pressure and won the set to love.
After Vinci went 4-2 up in the second, the match looked to be all but over but Witthoeft would rally to win the last four games consecutively and force a deciding set.
After trading breaks, the Italian would win the final three games to send her into the fourth round of the US Open for the fourth time.
Vinci memorably knocked out top seed Serena Williams in the semi-finals in New York in 2015 to reach her first and only grand slam final to date.
Elsewhere, former world number one Caroline Wozniacki defeated Monica Niculescu in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 to reach the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time this year.
