Marin Cilic beat Kei Nishikori 6-1, 7-6 (5) in the final of the Swiss Indoors Basel on Sunday to give himself every chance of qualifying for the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
Cilic’s big serve and lethal forehand were working from the get-go against Nishikori as the Croation stormed to a one set advantage in next to no time.
The combative Nishikori found some resemblance of rhythm in the second stanza as he forced a tie-breaker however he was unable to have to anything to show for his efforts as Cilic edged it 7-5 and doing so claimed the set, match and tournament title.

Cilic has now strengthened his position among the final two players looking to secure bids at the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, boosting his point total to 3,090 in the Emirates ATP Race To London.
Currently in the final qualification position, having passed Tomas Berdych on Saturday, he will look to have another good week at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris to book his spot at The O2 in London for a second time.
