Wawrinka reaches Indian Wells semi-finals

Stan Wawrinka progressed to the semi-finals of the BNP Paribas Open after a thrilling three-set victory over Dominic Thiem.

The third seed will face Pablo Carreno Busta in the final four of the Indian Wells tournament after the Swiss prevailed at the end of a two-and-a-half hour battle.

Wawrinka rallied from losing his serve in the opening game of the match, to break Thiem in the second and 10th games to take the first set.

But Thiem hit back by breaking Wawrinka again in the third game of the second set, before going on to tie the match 1-1.

Thiem’s hopes of harnessing that momentum in the third set were hit as his serve was broken and Wawrinka went into a 3-0 lead.

Despite a spirited comeback, Thiem couldn’t take advantage of break points, with Wawrinka claiming the match on the tie break.

Victory takes Wawrinka into the semi-finals at Indian Wells for the first time, when he tackles Carreno Busta.

The Spaniard survived two match points to get the better of Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas in a 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 win.
