Halep beats Svitolina after incredible comeback

AFC Cup 2019: Hà Nội FC 3-2 Altyn Asyr FK (Nguyễn Văn Quyết Penalty 87′)

Third seed Simona Halep battled back from a set and 1-5 down to complete a stunning comeback victory over Elina Svitolina in the Roland Garros quarter-finals.

Fifth seed Svitolina looked on course for one of the biggest wins of her career and a first ever appearance in a Grand Slam semi-final but eventually fell to a 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 defeat.

The 22-year-old Ukranian will be left bitterly disappointed, dreaming of what might have been after she was two breaks up and two points away from victory in the second set.

For the first half of the match it was all Svitolina. Two early breaks saw her race into a 5-0 lead in the first set, and though Halep was able to regain one of those lost breaks, Svitolina made no mistake in her next service game, serving out for a one-set lead.

The pattern of dominance continued in the second set, as Halep continued to struggle with unforced errors as Svitolina opened up a seemingly insurmountable 5-1 advantage courtesy of two more breaks of serve.

But Halep refused to give up and showed incredible fighting spirit to turn the tables on her opponent. She conjured up and converted a break point from nowhere at 2-5, held serve and then broke again in the next game to level the scores at 5-5.

The Romanian then squandered four break and set points at 5-6, but with the momentum now firmly on her side, she was able to edge the ensuing tie-break – though not before saving a match point – to level the scores at a set apiece.

Halep went from strength to strength in the third set, as a shell shocked Svitolina dropped her serve three times to surrender the match in tame fashion, handing Halep one of the most remarkable comeback wins of her career.

Awaiting Halep in the semi-finals is second seed Karolina Pliskova, who booked her place in the next round with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 victory over 28th seed Caroline Garcia of France.

It was a tight contest between the two players, with Pliskova grabbing an early break in the first set only for Garcia to get back on level terms a few games later.

Garcia then survived a marathon 11th game that went to deuce eight times, saving three break points, but Pliskova did not let her head drop and dominated the tie-break to open up a one-set lead.

The second set was close again and stayed on serve until the 10th game, when Pliskova pounced to earn solitary break and match point, converting courtesy of a forehand winner.
