Third seed Garbine Muguruza defeated French wildcard Fiona Ferro in straight sets to reach the third round at Roland Garros in Paris on Thursday.
The 24-year-old, who seemed to battle with her rhythm and range on the forehand hitting 26 winners and 23 unforced errors, saw off Ferro 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 27 minutes on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.

For Muguruza, the 2016 Roland Garros winner, it was the first-ever meeting against 21-year-old Ferro but she always looked to have the edge in the match.
In the opening set, two breaks of serve by Muguruza in the fifth and seventh games, despite dropping hers in the sixth, was enough for the Spaniard to claim the set 6-4.
The next set began with both players dropping serve in the opening two games, but thereafter it was all Muguruza as she claimed the Ferro serve in the seventh and ninth games to win the set and match 6-3 with a forehand winner.
The victory means that Muguruza will next face 2010 French Open runner-up Samantha Stosur of Australia after she defeated 30-seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia 6-2, 7-6 (1).
In a courtside interview afterwards, Muguruza said she felt good on the Paris clay.
“She’s young and she’s talented,” Muguruza said. “These matches are very difficult.
“The French Open is the tournament for me. My body is good and my tennis is following,” said Muguruza.
In another women’s result, Belgium’s 16th seed Elise Mertens beat Britain’s Heather Watson 6-3, 6-4 to reach the third round for the second year in a row.
