Canadiens cruise to another win

Colin Cowherd knows exactly how No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 12 Syracuse will end on Saturday

Dale Weise was on target again as the NHL-leading Montreal Canadiens cruised to a 4-1 win over the New York Islanders at the Bell Centre on Thursday night.

Weise opened the scoring on the powerplay with his eighth goal of the season – just two shy of his career-high of 10 last season – late in the opening period but Kyle Okposo pulled the Islanders level after the first intermission.

However, David Desharnais, Brendan Gallagher and Tomas Plekanec ensured the Habs took the points.

Braden Holtby stopped 28 shots to help Washington Capitals to a 4-1 win over Boston Bruins.

Holtby – who recorded three shutouts against the Bruins last season – was beaten after the puck deflected off Jimmy Hayes' chest and bounced into the net but goals from Alex Ovechkin, Brooks Laich, John Carlson and Karl Alzner guided the Capitals to victory.

Nikita Kucherov had a goal and an assist and Steven Stamkos scored his seventh goal of the season as Tampa Bay Lightning overcame Buffalo Sabres 4-1, while Mikael Backlund's overtime winner gave Calgary Flames a 2-1 win over Philadelphia Flyers.

Two goals from defenceman Nicklas Grossmann saw Arizona Coyotes beat Colorado Avalanche 4-2 and Cody Hodgson's first of the season was enough to see Nashville Predators win 3-2 at Minnesota Wild.

Bobby Ryan, Kyle Turris and Mika Zibanejad scored in the shootout to give Ottawa Senators a 3-2 win over Winnipeg Jets.

Patrick Marleau scored to record his 997th career point in San Jose Sharks' 5-2 win over Florida Panthers, while Gregory Campbell hit the game-winner as the struggling Columbus Blue Jackets won 3-2 against Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center.
