Sparta Prague were more than a match for a heavily favoured Schalke 04 side as the two teams played out a 1-1 draw in the Europa League on Thursday.
- Sparta Prague 1 Schalke 1
- Lafata opens the scoring
- Fatai has goal disallowed
- Geis equalizes form penalty spot
- Goretzka wastes chance to win it
An exciting encounter in Group K ended with Sparta Prague and Schalke sharing the points at the Generali Arena.
David Lafata gave the hosts an early lead with a powerful header in the sixth minute only for Johannes Geis to level matters with a 20th-minute penalty.
Both sides had good chances to grab the points in the second half, but it finished 1-1.
The visitors will have expected to take all three points from the game but, in the end, Prague were well worth a draw.
The hosts burst out of the gates and had Schalke under pressure from the kickoff. They were rewarded just six minutes into the game as Lafata rose highest to meet a beautiful Lukas Marecek cross to head Sparta into the lead.
The Czech side thought they had a second 10 minutes later but Kehinde Fatai's strike was ruled out for offside.
Schalke found their way back into the game in the 20th minute when Nhamoinesu Costa brought Klaas-Jan Huntelaar down in the box and Geis converted with a good penalty that nestled in the bottom right corner to make the score 1-1.
Leon Goretzka wasted a magnificent opportunity to put the visitors in the lead in the 54th minute after latching onto an inch-perfect through ball before somehow lifting his shot over the bar.
Marecek went close in the 62nd minute, but his shot flew agonisingly wide and the scores remained level for the remainder of the game.
