Seppi downs Istomin in Sydney

Italian fifth seed Andreas Seppi took three sets to beat Denis Istomin of the Uzbekistan in the first round of the Sydney International on Monday.

Seppi spent one hour and 43 minutes on court before defeating Istomin 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

In Monday’s other first round matches, Spain’s veteran Tommy Robredo made it past John Millman of Australia 7-6(3), 6-3 while Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay cruised past Germany’s Maximilian Marterer (Germany) 6-4, 6-4.

Australia’s Jordan Thompson got past Martin Klizan of Slovakia when his opponent retired injured when leading 6-2, 4-0 and America’s Alexander Sarkissian played well to beat Simone Bolelli of Italy 6-2, 7-6(5).
