The Awadhe Warriors made sure of their place in the Premier Badminton League semi-finals with a 4-1 victory over the Chennai Smashers on Monday.

The Smashers drew first blood in the opening men’s singles match when their man Brice Leverdez beat Tanongsak Saemsomboonsak 15-13, 15-9.

The Warriors hit back immediately in the second men’s singles contest, however, with Sai Praneeth fighting back from a game down to beat Tony Suncoro 12-15, 15-8, 15-13.

And they took the lead after the next match, as the men’s doubles duo of Cai Yun and Hendra Gunawan beat Pranaav Chopra and Toby Ng 15-13, 15-11.

The Smashers refused to lie down, hitting back through PV Sindhu in the women’s singles, the Indian shuttler defeating her compatriot Vrushali Gummadi 15-7 15-3 to level the scores at 2-2.

It all came down to the final mixed doubles contest between the Warriors’ Bodin Issara and Christina Pederson, and the Smashers duo of Chris Adcock and Pia Zebadiah.

Both teams had selected the decider as their Trump match, but the result went the way of Issara and Pederson, who won 15-7, 15-10 to send their side into the semi-finals.
