Djokovic seals narrow win at Paris Masters

The Outsiders – Women – Roland Garros 2019

World number one Novak Djokovic was made to work for his place in the third round of the Paris Masters on Tuesday.

Djokovic secured a 7-5, 6-3 win over Thomaz Bellucci, but needed 95 minutes to do so and was pushed all the way by the Brazilian.

The pair traded breaks midway through the first set before Bellucci defended a breakpoint in fourth game to keep the scores level at 4-4. However, Djokovic finally made the breakthrough in the 12th game to take the set.

Bellucci again managed to keep pace with the Serbian in the second set, holding his serve throughout the first six games.

The turning point eventually came in the eighth game when Djokovic finally broke the 27-year-old to edge ahead and he then served out the set to claim his 18th consecutive victory.

Djokovic will face Gilles Simon in the third round after the Frenchman downed compatriot Benoit Paire. The world number 15 was handed a stern test by Paire before securing a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory.

Meanwhile, qualifier Lukas Rosol will face world number six and 2007 finalist Rafael Nadal in round two after he beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Nadal, the seventh seed, was handed a first-round bye.
