Caroline Wozniacki believes Li Na’s success on the WTA Tour inspired a generation of Chinese tennis players.
The Dane was speaking ahead of the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, China, this week. Na won two grand slam titles and rose to world number two during her illustrious career.
"Li Na was a great player and obviously won a lot," the former world number one is quoted as saying on wtatennis.com.
"And she was also a very popular player on tour. So hopefully we're going to get another Asian player who can play on the same level.
"I think there are a lot of Chinese coming up now thanks to Li Na. Now it's a lot more popular in Asia to play tennis so hopefully we'll see another star. The Chinese players have a great work ethic, they have good facilities, so I don't see why not.
"Hard work pays off and you have to go out and compete. There are a lot of players that are competing to a very good level, so they can keep pushing each other to play better and better."
Woznicaki is in Group D for the tournament, along with Svetlana Kuznetsoava and Roberta Vinci.
