Sharapova waltzes into third round

World number five Maria Sharapova faced little difficulty in her second round match at the Australian Open on Wednesday, hammering Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-2, 6-1.

Sharapova, who was nursing a left forearm injury coming into the first grand slam of the year, continued to show no signs of weakness as she raced to victory in just over an hour.

The Russian Sharapova was in red-hot form from the outset as she quickly carved out a 4-0 advantage in the first set after breaking Sasnovich twice. However, Sasnovich broke back in the fifth game before Sharapova returned the favour in the next game.

Despite breaking Sharapova for a second time, it was too little too late for Sasnovich as the 28-year-old clinched the first set 6-2.

The fighting spirit Sasnovich had shown in the first set was absent in the second and Sharapova took full advantage of this as she broke the Belarusian twice en route to a comfortable victory.

Sharapova will either face Lauren Davis or Magdalena Rybarikova in the third round.
