Nick Kyrgios is looking forward to his third round match against sixth seed Tomas Berdych at the Australian Open.
The 20-year-old eased past Pablo Cuevas in straight sets at the Hisense Arena on Wednesday, booking a third round date with the Czech. Interestingly enough, this will be the first clash between the two.
Despite this, Kyrgios believes he know what Berdych has in store for him.
“I know what he’s capable of,” said the Australian of Berdych in the post-match press conference.
“He’s one of the best players in the world. I’ve played him a couple times. He’s going to be wanting to win as much as I’m going to be wanting to win, so it’s going to be tough.”
Kyrgios has proved to be a tough opponent on his day, as the 29th seed has a 4-10 win/loss record against top ten players. In 2015, he reached the quarter-finals of the Melbourne event.
The Queenslander went on to heap praise on Cuevas, who crunched 15 aces and 32 winners past him.
“I knew it was going to be tough going into that,” added Kyrgios.
“He’s a great athlete, makes a lot of balls. I thought the first set was really key, had to get the first set. I thought he was pretty high level.
“We both played well from the back. I didn’t really think he could serve at that high level. And he was really impressive in that category today. He served really well.”
