Yamaguchi falls, Ji Hyun through at Malaysia Masters

Akane Yamaguchi retired hurt while Sung Ji Hyun advanced to the second round of the women’s singles at the Victor Far East Malaysia Masters on Wednesday.

Seeded second, Yamaguchi faced fellow Japanese shuttler Saene Kawakami. However, just four points into the opening game, Yamaguchi was forced to retire due to an unfortunate injury.

The unseeded Kawakami will now face Kirsty Gilmore of Scotland in the second round.

Meanwhile, top seed Ji Hyun needed just 38 minutes to overcome Ngan Yi Cheung 21-11, 21-17.

In other results, third seed Venkata Sindhu battled past Sabrina Jaquet 21-17, 21-16, while fourth seed Yeon Ju Bae of South Korea defeated Indonesia’s Xiaoyu Liang 21-14, 21-17.

Fifth seed Sayaka Sato was too strong for local Jing Yi Tee, winning 21-19, 21-17.

Finally, Indonesia’s Lindaweni Fanertri upset sixth seed Minatsue Mitani 21-13, 21-17.
