Australia were knocked out of the AFC U23 Championship following their draw against Jordan while the United Arab Emirates remained undefeated, seeing them through to the quarter-final stage.
Jordan and Australia battled out to a goalless draw in Doha. The result sees Jordan finish second in Group D with one win and two draws, while Australia’s loss to the UAE last week sees them miss out on the knockout stage.
Meanwhile, UAE saw their undefeated run continue when they defeated Vietnam 3-2. Nguyen Cong Phuong gave Vietnam the lead midway through the first half own, but an own goal from Pham Hoang Lam tied the match up.
Nguyen Van Dung snatched back the lead in the second half, but Mohamed Al Akberi level matters with 17 minutes remaining.
Five minutes later, Vietnam’s Xuan Truong was sent off for stopping a goal-bound header with his hands. Al Hashmi sent the penalty crashing into the back of the net and his side into the last eight.
UAE will now face Iraq at the Grand Hamad Stadium in Doha on January 23. Meanwhile, Jordan face the undefeated South Korea on the same day at the Suheim Bin Hamad Stadium across town.
The other quarter-finals see Japan take on Iran while Qatar tackle North Korea.
