Eustaquio scores first round stoppage

UFC 241: Paulo Costa beats Yoel Romero via Unanimous Decision in Fight of the Year candidate

Team Lakay's cool and calm striking ace, Geje "Gravity" Eustaquio turned in a solid performance against Malaysia's Saiful "The Vampire" Merican, winning by emphatic knockout in a flyweight battle at ONE: CLASH OF HEROES on Friday, January 29, at the Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur.

After walking out to the ONE Championship cage to the tune of "Kung-Fu Fighting", the 26-year old Eustaquio put his trademark striking prowess on full display against Merican, who didn't get the chance to put two punches together.

After a brief moment where both fighters took the time to size each other up, Merican lunged in looking to put together a combination but Eustaquio took a step back and unleashed a counter left hook as Merican was coming in. With Merican face down on the mat, the referee stopped the bout after a technical ground kick landed for good measure. Time of the stoppage was 1:21 of the first round.

With the victory, Eustaquio snapped a two-fight losing skid as he returned to solid form.

It's been long since Eustaquio challenged former titleholder Adriano Moraes for the ONE Flyweight World Championship. Moraes lost the title to current champion Kairat Akhmetov back in November.

Eustaquio, considered one of the most talented fighters in Filipino MMA, could make another run at the title in the near future. The hard-earned victory tonight certainly points him to the right direction.
