Christian Clemens' first-half strike proved to be the difference as Mainz 05 battled to a 1-0 victory over Borussia MG at Coface Arena on Friday night.

The home side claimed the lead in the 21st minute through Christian Clemens and very nearly added to their slender advantage on more than one occasion.
 
However, they were unable to find a second goal, while at the opposite end of the pitch, Borussia MG failed to make their chances count as they suffered a second straight defeat in the Bundesliga.

The first chance of the match fell to Mainz in the eighth minute, but Jairo Samperio fired just inches wide of the left post following some good work in the build up by Danny Latza.
 
The Borussians hit back with a chance of their own just one minute later and managed to get their effort on target, although goalkeeper Loris Karius was alert to the danger to keep out Havard Nordtveit's goal-bound header.
 
Following a brief lull in play the match sprang to life on 21 minutes when Clemens fired a powerful long-range effort into the top-right corner after latching onto a neat pass from Samperio.
 
They had a glorious opportunity to double their lead a short while later, but Stefan Bell could not direct his header on target from the centre of the box.
 
The visitors grew in stature as the first half progressed and saw efforts from Raffael and Lars Stindl kept out by Mainz's keeper, before Martin Hinteregger headed over from Ibrahima Traoré's inswinging corner in the 39th minute.
 
Both sides continued to create chances, with Stindl firing wide of the mark for Borussia MG, while Yunus Malli and Bell went close adding to the hosts' advantage in the dying moments of the half.
 
The second stanza started at a cautious tempo, with neither side willing to commit too many men forward in the opening exchanges.
 
The Borussians had the first real noteworthy chance on 55 minutes, with Fabian Johnson seeing his goal-bound effort saved in the centre of goal by Karius.
 
Mainz 05 created two good chances of their own in the minutes that followed, but failed to hit the target as both Daniel Brosinski and Gaëtan Bussmann fired wide of the mark.
 
The Foals lodged another shot on target in the 72nd minute but Karius was alert to the danger, keeping out Raffael's right-footed shot.
 
The second half ended with a flurry of chances as Leon Balogun and Jhon Córdoba failed to hit the target for Mainz, while Borussia MG's Andreas Christensen fired over the bar following a set-piece situation.
