There was no separating Excelsior and Willem II as they played to a goalless draw in a closely contested Eredivisie clash at Stadion Woudestein on Friday evening.
The hosts shaded first-half proceedings but rarely forced Willem II goalkeeper Kostas Lamprou into action, while the visitors failed to lodge a single shot on target.
Brandley Kuwas and Rick Kruys squandered early efforts for Excelsior, with Willem II's Erik Falkenburg firing wide of the mark from a tight angle in the seventh minute of play.
Later efforts from Rick Kruys, Brandley Kuwas, Sander Fischer also failed to hit the target as the first half ended in a stalemate.
Willem II came flying out of the traps after the half-time break, with Bartholomew Ogbeche firing high and wide from outside the box in the 48th minute.
The home side hit back with a chance of their own a few minutes later, but Daan Bovenberg inexplicably headed wide from just six yards out when it would have been easier to score.
Jurgen Streppel's men regained control of proceedings shortly thereafter, creating a series of good opportunities. However, Lucas Andersen, Robbie Haemhouts and Funso Ojo could not hit the target as the match entered the final quarter hour.
The visitors kept on pressing for the all-important breakthrough but it was not to be their night as late efforts from Ojo and Ogbeche once again lacked accuracy.
