BVB Dortmund head coach Thomas Tuchel reckons the interest from other clubs in Ilkay Gundogan will complicate contract negotiations with the player.
The Germany international’s current deal expires in 2017 after penning a new deal in July 2015, but the club is in negotiations to tie him down for a longer term.
However, Tuchel conceded the speculation linking him with some of the best club’s around Europe is making it difficult to reach an agreement that suits both parties.
“The importance of Ilkay is undisputed – I would like to tell you that he has extended until 2026,” he said of Saturday’s league match against Hannover 96.
“Unfortunately that is not the case, but we are in talks. We have a good chance. The interest in Gundogan is great, which is why talks are not very easy.”
Speaking about the fixture against Hannover, Tuchel warned his players not to be complacent despite the differing fortunes between the two sides in the league this year.
“The preparation for an opponent is impartial of their position in the table,” he explained. “It’s hard to adjust for Hannover as their line-up and style of play will be hard to predict. Our aspiration is to dominate the game.”
