Carolina Garcia sealed her spot in the semi-finals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships with a straight sets victory over Andrea Petkovic.
The up-and-coming 22-year-old looked dominant during her 6-3 6-4 win, and her reward was a first ever Premier-level semifinal.
“It was very difficult conditions, very windy,” Garcia said afterwards. “It’s never easy to play in these conditions so you have to be focused.
“I played pretty aggressive today but you have to against [Petkovic] – she’s a big fighter.”
Counting against Petkovic was a shaky serve throughout the match. The German coughed up 10 double faults, and Garcia took full advantage.
While Petkovic could only earn one break point in the match, Garcia had 10, and converted four of them.
“That’s one where I was looking to improve, to put the pressure on my opponent, especially on her second serve,” Garcia said after the match. “She did some double faults so I tried to put a bit more pressure for those free points.”
Garcia moves on to face Barbora Strycova, who ended the run of Serbia’ Ana Ivanovic.
The Czech player edged a tight first set in a tie-break and then took the second set by three breaks to two for a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory.
The other semi-final sees Italian Sara Errani take on Elina Svitolina of the Ukraine.
Errani dropped the first set against Madison Brengle but turned it all around in the next two for a 4-6 6-1 6-4 victory.
Svitolina, meanwhile, survived a second-set blow out to beat Caroline Vandweghe 6-4 1-6 6-2.
