GGG to face winner of Alvarez v Khan

Gennady Golovkin’s promoter says the contracts have been signed and the winner of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez v Amir Khan is in line to face his man in the ring.

Tom Loeffler revealed that a deal is in place and that Golovkin, already the WBA ‘Super’, IBF and WBC ‘interim’ world middleweight champion, will look to add to his collection by taking on either current WBC champion Alvarez, or the new champion Khan, should the challenger win.

Loeffler told fighthype.com: “It’s not a verbal. Everything is in writing, signed by our side, by the Golden Boy side and the WBC. We have a good relationship with Golden Boy and a lot of respect for Canelo. It was part of allowing the voluntary defence they requested.

“Everything is mandated. The winner of Canelo v Khan has 15 days to commit to fighting Gennady or not. If they commit then we’ll start negotiating to put that fight together.

“It’s so hard to get an opponent in the ring with Gennady. If I stopped working with certain people, it’d be even less.

“Danny Jacobs had a tremendous win over Peter Quillin with a first round knockout. Gennady sold out Madison Square Garden and Jacobs is from New York. That’s just one off the top of my head that would be a great match-up.

“Naturally, the focus is on Canelo. If everything goes the right way with the fight with Wade, or unifying with [WBO champion] Billy Joe Saunders. If one of those fights can’t get made, the Jacobs fight is a huge fight for the middleweight division.”

Golovkin is hopeful that the winner of Alvarez v Khan will not pull out so that he can challenge for the WBC strap.

“I want a unification fight. It doesn’t matter with who, I’m ready. I feel great,” he said.

“Absolutely, I’m ready. Right now my focus is on Dominic Wade, because he’s the IBF mandatory challenger. I respect the mandatory challenger.

“Right now I’m to Canelo, the mandatory challenger. I think he’s very correct like me. I think it’s good for both, for business, for Canelo, for Khan. For money, why not?”
