Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi says he will start the new season using the ‘standard’ Yamaha, similar to his 2015 bike after finishing the penultimate MotoGP pre-season test at Phillip Island on Friday.
After combining the times from the two days of testing, Rossi and team-mate Jorge Lorenzo finished sixth and fourth overall respectively.
In an interview afterwards, Rossi said he preferred the 2015 bike because he was faster when using it.
“I prefer the 2015 bike because I’m faster, but especially when I ride I feel better. Especially the front,” said Rossi.
“With the 2016 bike, I have a bit more issue in the entry to the corner. I’m not so far with the lap time [on the 2016], but anyway, I am a little bit slower.
“So I think it is done. We will race with the bike more similar to the 2015.”
Rossi acknowledged that the 2016 bike needed work but, for now, he would use the 2015 machine.
“This is possible but is a long story maybe. In fact, we tried also today to modify and work to understand and give to Yamaha some important advice and data for the future.
“But at this moment we have to concentrate on the present and with the standard [bike] I’m fast, so I think we will continue with that.”
In Friday’s testing, Rossi was fifth fastest just 0.277s behind pace setter Marc Marquez on his Honda.
