The Philippines squandered an opportunity to take second place in Group G of the joint 2018 World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup qualifiers after suffering their second loss of the campaign on Tuesday.
With qualification rivals Uzbekistan not in action on Tuesday, a victory could have seen the Azkals move up from third on the table and they could even have been considered favourites after their 2-1 victory in the reverse fixture in Bocaue City in June.
However, they were unable to produce the goods away from home and went on to suffer a 2-0 loss in the clash at the Bahrain National Stadium.
In the first encounter all three goals were scored in the second half, and the home fans were made to wait until after half time for goals in the second match too.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 53rd minute of the match when veteran midfielder Ismaeel Abdullatif found the back of the net.
Bahrain doubled their lead just seven minutes later when defender Sayed Mohamed Adnan added his name to the scoresheet.
The victory also saw the Gulf nation move within a single point of the Philippines who are third in Group G. The Philippines will face Yemem in the next round of qualifiers in November, while Bahrain play Korea.
