Shapovalov powers past Sandgren at Winston-Salem

Serbia's Jelena Jankovic and Australia's Samantha Stosur both won their first round matches in the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open on Tuesday.

Fourth-seeded Jankovic comfortably beat Ana Bogdan of Romania 6-4, 6-2 in 83 minutes while fifth seed Stosur had few issues when winning against Japan's Risa Ozaki 6-3, 6-1.

In other matches, Britain's Heather Watson got past Chinese local Zhang Kailin 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in just over two hours, and Kurumi Nara of Japan easily beat Hong Kong's Zhang Ling 6-0, 6-3.

French seventh seed Caroline Garcia was too good for America's Lauren Davis, winning 6-1, 6-3 while Russian sixth seed Daria Gavrilova had to work hard to beat Japan's Miyu Kato 6-7(6), 7-5, 6-3 in two hours and 47 minutes.
