Malaysia recorded the first win of their joint 2018 World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup qualifying campaign when they beat Timor Leste 1-0 on Tuesday.
Johor DT striker Mohd Amri Yahyah scored the only goal of the match in Dili's National Stadium in the 10th minute to move Malaysia into fourth place in Group A, while their opponents on the day remain rooted to the foot of the table.
The victory was a welcome tonic for Malaysia, after their last match – a 3-0 defeat to Saudi Arabia – was called off with three minutes remainining due to crowd unrest.
Earlier in the campaign, the Dollah Salleh-led started the campaign with a 1-1 draw against the Timorese at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium, a 6-0 loss to Palestine and a 10-0 defeat to the UAE saw the former Malaysian international quit as national coach.
Ong Kim Swee subsequently took over the Malaysian national coaching job on a temporary basis.
Malaysia travel to Palestine for their next match on November 12, while Timor Leste take on UAE in an away match on the same day.
