Johor Darul Ta’zim manager Mario Gomez has hailed the contribution of influential captain Safiq Rahim.
Safiq, who was also voted the 2015 Most Valuable Player of the AFC Cup, is once again proving his worth in this year’s campaign, having already scored six goals in just three matches.
The Southern Tigers have now won nine games on the trot in all competitions, and Gomez knows that Safiq has played a massive part in their success.
“Safiq is an important player for JDT … he is very good with the ball and creates opportunities not only for himself but also his team-mates. You can also count on him to score goals,” said Gomez.
Coming off the bench in the second-half during JDT’s 3-0 win over Lao Toyota on Wednesday, Safiq responded by scoring two of those three goals.
“There weren’t that many chances in the first half because of Lao Toyota’s defensive play. But we got it right after the break,” said Gomez.
Safiq’s brace followed a hat-trick in JDT’s 8-1 AFC Cup win over Myanmar’s Ayeyawady United, and the winning goal in their 1-0 result against Bangladesh’s Bengaluru, underlining his impressive goalscoring form.
