Saturday’s La Liga wrap

Granada and Rayo Vallecano played out a fascinating stalemate in Saturday’s La Liga action, while Sporting Gijon were too strong for a weakened Atletico Madrid side.

Atletico Madrid look set to fall further behind La Liga leaders Barcelona after a late comeback saw Sporting Gijon beat them 2-1 at Estadio Municipal El Molinón on Saturday.

Atleti took the lead just before the half-hour mark when Antoine Griezmann struck a fantastic free kick over the jumping wall and into the top corner

It was another free kick, this one drilled hard and low by Antonio Sanabria, that drew the hosts level with the  help of a deflection off the wall in the 79th minute, and they completed their comeback 10 minutes later when Carlos Castro tapped home following a strong run down the left flank and inviting balll across goal from Jony.

Granada and Rayo Vallecano had to settle for a point each after they played out a 2-2 draw at Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes, with the visitors equalised twice at the end of either half.

Two goals from Youssef El-Arabi, the first in the 11th minute and the second from the penalty spot in the 54th minute, put Granda ahead before Pablo Hernandez struck on the stroke of halftime for Rayo and Zé Castro salvaged a point in the 87th minute.

The result leaves both sides on 28 points in the standings, which puts them above the relegation zone on goal difference alone.

Las Palmas needed just a solitary goal at the end of the first half to claim a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad at Estadio Municipal de Anoeta.

William Jose latched onto Jonathan Viera’s assist to give the hosts the lead in the 39th minute, which could have been more had Viera not missed his 13th-minute penalty.

Deportivo La Coruna left it late to claim a 2-1 win over Levante at Estadio Municipal de Riazor that leaves the visitors rock-bottom of the standings.

Some neat footwork to dodge defenders saw Luis Alberto put Deportivo ahead ahead just before halftime, but the relegation-threatened visitors equalised soon after the break thanks to Giuseppe Rossi’s 50th minute strike.

But the hosts got a piece of luck in the 85th minute when a shot from close range cannoned off the post and into goalkeeper Diego Marino, deflecting it back into his own net.

Sporting Gijon 2-1 Atletico Madrid
