World number one Novak Djokovic believes the top men’s tennis players should get more prize money than women as they “sell more tickets”.
Djokovic’s comments have come after Serena Williams lashed out at Indian Wells tournament director Raymond Moore following his sexist remarks claiming the women’s game rode “on the coattails” of men like Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
Moore said that the women’s players should thank the popularity of the male players for boosting their earnings.
“If I was a lady player, I’d go down every night on my knees and thank God that Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal were born because they have carried this sport. They really have.”

The Serb, 28, who won the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on Sunday said women “fought for what they deserve and they got it”.
But he added: “Stats are showing that we have much more spectators on the men’s tennis matches. I think that is one of the reasons why maybe we should get awarded more.
“As long as it is like that and there is data and stats available and information… upon who attracts more attention, spectators, who sells more tickets and stuff like that, in relation to that it has to be fairly distributed.”
